La llegada de los conquistadores españoles al continente americano dio inicio a uno de los genocidios más grandes en la historia de la humanidad. Al menos 90 millones de pobladores de la región fueron exterminados.
El antropólogo brasileño Darcy Ribeiro planteó que a finales del siglo XV, al momento en que arribaron los conquistadores europeos a América, existían aproximadamente 70 millones de indígenas. Un siglo y medio después solo quedaron unos tres millones y medio.

La invasión genocida, como también se le conoce, no solo exterminó a millones de pobladores de la región, sino que también se valió del “secuestro, tortura, deportación, mercantilización y esclavitud de millones de habitantes del continente africano” como mano de obra barata en el “nuevo” continente, reseña el portal Rebelión.
